Colleen Faye Benway

February 26, 1934 — September 7, 2023

Melcher-Dallas

“Are you hungry?” That’s a frequent question that was asked by Colleen Faye Benway, who moved on to her eternal heavenly home on Thursday, September 7th, 2023. Colleen spent so much of her life caring for others, that questioning if people wanted something to eat became a habit. Whether she fed people at “Colleen’s Cafe” or in Grandma’s kitchen, they would always talk about the pies, potato salad, beef and noodles, and fried chicken with mashed potatoes. The meals she served were so difficult to replicate. And the biggest reason that is so, is because of the amount of love she added to the recipe to ensure people were full.

That same love and compassion to make sure people were fed is what led her and Harvey to start a church and provide some spiritual food. And maybe her desire to make sure people were full, helped lead them to name the church Full Faith Christian Center. As Pastor Colleen, she had a deep desire to make sure that everybody knew that they could not “live on bread alone”, but that they needed the Word of God, and to place their faith in Jesus Christ. Her life leaves behind a legacy here on earth, of faithful service in caring for others both physically and spiritually.

When she wasn’t studying the Bible, preparing a message or running errands, Colleen would often be found tending to her flower garden or spending time with her family and friends. She loved being around all of the kids, regardless if they were related or not. If she knew you, she loved you. And if she loved you, she probably fed you in more than one way.

The time she spent, the conversations she had, and the laughter she shared all brought her immense joy. And that joy is something we all saw and felt when we were with her. That joy is part of the legacy she leaves with those she is survived by, like her daughter, Deb Verwers; her grandsons: Cory (Rebecca) Verwers, Dustin (Danielle) Verwers, Joshua (Genevieve) Verwers, and B.J. (Abby) Verwers; great-grandchildren: Corissa, Zoey, Grayson, Carter, Jonas, Eliana, Felicity, Olivia, Kierra, Logan, Reagan, Micah, Jacob, and Liam; her brother, Marvin Breese and sister, Leona (Daryl) Ripperger; sister-in-law, Joan Breese; and many nieces and nephew.

As Colleen is welcomed home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus, she is also reunited with those that preceded her in death, her husband, Harvey Benway; son, Wayne Benway; brother, Myron Breese; sister, Betty Grife; and her parents, Ralph and Alma (Borchert) Breese.

You can visit with Colleen’s family at Pierschbacher Funeral Home at 203 Center St. NW in Melcher-Dallas on Monday, September 11th, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Immediately following the visitation, we will have a service at 11:30 AM to celebrate Colleen’s life. And to continue Colleen’s habit of asking if you’d like something to eat, family and friends are invited to enjoy a meal following the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Colleen’s family.
