Services for Clayton Vandenburg, age 18 of Chariton, will be held Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends on Friday, December 27, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in care of Clayton's family. Clayton David Ray Vandenburg was born January 28, 2001 to Heather and Dave Vandenburg in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Clayton was born with the heart of a cowboy. Clayton's sister, Kelton, was born in 2002 and his brother, Caiden, was born in 2003. Being so close in age, the siblings were like the Three Muskateers. Clayton had the childhood of a cowboy; living with his parents and siblings on cattle ranches in Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Clayton was rarely seen without his cowboy boots and cowboy hat. Clayton and his family built a cabin in the Ozarks during his early teen years. They would wake up every morning and cook their breakfast over an open fire. In 2014, Clayton's family moved back to Lucas County, Iowa. He attended Chariton High School. It was fun for him to reconnect with childhood friends. He was involved in FFA and was quite good at Archery. While still in high school, Clayton was a part of the Youth Rodeo and participated in rodeos in Fort Dodge. He even took on the challenge of riding a bull several times! Clayton graduated with the class of 2019. Over the past couple of years, Clayton began working with his dad on motorcycles. They would find cheap bikes that needed a lot of work and spent countless hours fixing them up. Clayton really enjoyed those late nights working side by side with his father. Clayton took a job at the Hy-Vee Distribution Center in their freezer warehouse. When he wasn't working, he was spending time with family and friends. He was very close with his younger siblings and idolized his older siblings, especially his big brother, Zach. Clayton was also a very proud uncle. Clayton was a generous and thoughtful person. He was known to help anyone that he could, whether he knew them personally or not. He had a great big heart and was compassionate beyond compare. His big grin and passion for life will be greatly missed by so many. Clayton passed away on December 15, 2019. He is survived by his parents, Heather Dawn and Dave Vandenburg; siblings: Kris Vandenburg, Meghan Fisk, Zach Clark, Kelton Vandenburg, and Caiden Vandenburg; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
