Carl Edward Burns

February 17, 1955 — November 7, 2019

Carl Edward Burns, age 64, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa following a short illness. Carl was born February 17, 1955 in Centerville, Iowa to Glen and Doris (Blumer) Burns. Carl attended elementary school in Brazil and Mystic, Iowa prior to completing junior high. He moved with his family to Avery, lowa at that time and continued his education in Albia Schools. Carl made his home in Avery, Iowa as an adult and considered that his hometown. Carl began working at Pella Corporation in Pella, Iowa during the 1970’s. That was his career for many years but retired early due to health issues. Carl was married to Lori Mason and became a huge part of that family as well as partaking in his own family activities. Carl spent a great amount of time in the outdoors. He enjoyed bird watching, learning much about their sounds and habits from his Uncle Dwight. They also spent time mushroom hunting and enjoying nature. Carl was an avid pheasant, quail and deer hunter in his younger years. He enjoyed family and special occasions with his siblings, in-laws and many nieces and nephews. He would dress as Santa at Christmas and play that role well to their delight. Carl was a very social person and had friends no matter where he went. He loved making contact with people along the way if he was traveling or just running errands. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone.
In Carl’s later years he moved into his brother’s home in Bussey, Iowa where he became very comfortable and developed a whole new legion of friends from that area. In addition to being a companion to his brother, he spent a great deal of time with friends he met at the local store and other businesses. He became a regular at some of these stops especially the store which he visited nearly daily. He also enjoyed walking or riding his bike to meet and greet people which he did for exercise and his social well-being. Carl continued to live in Bussey with his brother, Max, for many years. They were later joined by another brother who Carl also did errands with and for during their time together. The three of them mutually shared responsibilities and supported one another.
Carl will be missed by his survivors which include 5 sisters; Dorothy Parcel of Texas, Maxine (Russell) Agan of Buffalo, Iowa, Margaret (Charles) Arnold and Marlene DeMoss of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Mary (David) Jenkins of Missouri. He has 3 surviving brothers; Max and Bob Burns of Bussey, Iowa and Jim (Cindy) Admire of Centerville, Iowa. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews, other extended family members and special friends that touched his life.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, John Admire and his twin brothers, Larry and Jerry Burns.
