Billy Rex Jones, the only child of Robert "Eldon" and Leota Dean (Roberts) Jones was born August 1, 1926 in a farmhouse in Wayne County. He was called home to be with the Lord on January 6, 2021 at the age of 94 years, 5 months, and 5 days. Bill grew up on the farm and attended Fairview Country School. He graduated from Humeston High School in 1943. After high school, Bill continued working on the farm with his parents. Bill served his country in the United States Army being honorably discharged in 1952. Bill was united in marriage to Nellie Irene Garton on April 2, 1950 at the Baptist Church in Russell, Iowa. Together, they shared nearly 62 years of marriage. After Nelle became a resident in the Chariton Nursing Home in October 2007, Bill would make the trip daily to visit her until he became a resident there on December 24, 2011. To this union, two children were born, Barbara Kay and Rex Eugene. Bill and Nelle lived in Chariton, Iowa for a short period of time and then moved to a farm southwest of Derby, Iowa. In 1952, they moved to Derby where they spent the remainder of their married life. Bill worked for Lucas County from November 1952 to April 1955. He then owned and operated a milk truck from May 1955 to the spring of 1963. He worked as a fieldman for Central Farms Milk Plant in Allerton, Iowa from the spring of 1963 to February 1967. On February 17, 1967, Bill was hired by HyVee. He worked in the warehouse until he could bid a job driving peddle runs. He then became a semi driver. He found enjoyment using the CB, where his handle was "Trooper's Nightmare," which he earned by having so many speeding tickets. Bill finished his career with HyVee in the "repack" room and retired May 8, 1991. Bill loved trains and the railroad. He loved to read about them and travel to depots to learn more history. He also loved to visit and reminisce with people. His memory was remarkable and he shared so much of it with others. Bill enjoyed having coffee with Gussie and the boys at the big round table in the Derby Restaurant. Much good fellowship was shared there and many interesting conversations and discussion were had. Bill was most happy when he was working. After retirement, he spent many hours mowing and trimming grass for the town of Derby. He received a plaque from the town for his dedication and hard work. He was honored to have received it. Bill was willing to lend a helping hand wherever and whenever needed. He always wanted to help his family, friends, and neighbors, expecting nothing in return. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was immensely proud of his family and especially proud that all of his four grandchildren had graduated from college. He loved and cherished his family dearly. In his youth, Bill accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized at the Humeston Baptist Church. He was a man of quiet faith who loved his Lord. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie; his parents, Eldon and Leota Jones; parents-in-law, Charles Lee and Addie Garton; sister-in-law, Bernadine Reisch (Rollie); brother-in-law, Howard (Vivian) Garton; sister-in-law, June Fousek; son-in-law, John Tolly; and very dear friends Kenneth Baker and Charles Winchell.
