Betty L. Szerencse

A Graveside Service for Betty L. Szerencse, 74 of Chariton, formerly of Des Moines, will be held Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Chariton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Betty's family and will be used to honor her memory at a later date. Betty Lucille Blood was born June 7, 1942 to Frank and Meta Blood in West Des Moines, Iowa. Betty was one of four children born to the couple. Her family farmed for a time in West Des Moines and then relocated to a farm in Adel, Iowa. Betty graduated from Adel High School. On October 20, 1963, Betty was united in marriage to Jack Szerencse in Adel. The couple was blessed with two sons, Randy and Matthew. Betty was a loving mother to her boys and to her step-daughter, Debra. The family lived in Des Moines for forty plus years, in Denver, CO for two years, and finally settled in Chariton, Iowa. Betty loved her job with the Convention of Visitors Bureau in Des Moines. She had the opportunity to travel the country while promoting tourism development for thirty-three years. Betty was always active in her church. She enjoyed helping with the church youth programs. She also enjoyed fishing, gardening, canning, and playing the piano. She was proud of her children and their accomplishments. She was a people person and would strike up a conversation with anyone. Betty was a loving and dedicated wife. After her husband, Jack, had open-heart surgery in 1971, Betty helped did everything she could to strengthen his heart and bring him back to full health. The couple shared 53 years of marriage. Betty passed away October 21, 2016 at the age of 74. She will be greatly missed by so many. Betty is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jack Szerencse of Chariton; son, Randy Szerencse; son, Matthew Szerencse of Chariton; step-daughter, Debra (Tom) Robison of Des Moines; grandchildren, Brian Norton and Amy Miller; brother, Ernest (Anita) Blood of Illinois; sister, Mary Ericson of Miller, MO; and brother, Max (Linda) Blood of MO. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Meta Blood. Service
