Bernard grew up alongside his siblings: Art, Dorothy, and Jerry. He attended Chariton High School with the class of 1959. Bernard met Barbara Griffin at the movie theater in Chariton. They fell in love and were united in marriage on February 15, 1958. The couple made their home in Melcher-Dallas and were blessed with four children: Jim, Ron, Lisa, and Natasha. Bernard started his own roofing business, BW & Sons Roofing. The business eventually became MD Roofing. Bernard enjoyed the work and loved having people stop by his shop to visit. He always insisted on charging by the job, never by the hour. Bernard was proud to own his own business and never truly retired. When Iowa winters kept him from working, Bernard made some extra money by playing and winning pool games. Bernard enjoyed working on projects around the house. He always had a project going, sometimes multiple projects. He enjoyed making their place beautiful and tending to his vegetable and flower gardens. Bernard also liked having animals around. Over the years he raised dogs, cows, pigs, chickens, rabbits, geese, turkeys, and even peacocks. He loved to hunt and did a little catfishing. Bernard was the best kind of stubborn and lived his life his way. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Wells; children: Jim (Marietta) Wells, Lisa Rohrich, and Natasha (Brandon Evans) Wells; daughter-in-law, Teresa Collins-Wells; grandchildren: Hannah, BJ, Jo, Mallie, Ronnie Jr., Nicole, Heather, Victoria, and Mike; 11 great grandchildren; along with many relatives and friends. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ron Wells; great granddaughter, Korissa Wells; and siblings: Art Wells, Dorothy Spoon, and Jerry Dean Wells.
