Wilbert A. Stephens

November 5, 1933 — December 19, 2017

On December 19, 2017 God gained a holy man. Wilbert was a devoted Christian who loved his God, wife, and family. When you met Wilbert your life was forever changed. He knew exactly what to say to make you happy and put a smile on your face. He was a humble and joy-filled servant of the Lord. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Interment will follow at the Chariton Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Legacy Lodge Hospice in Chariton. Wilbert Stephens was born on November 5, 1933 in Albia, Iowa. He was a mischievous boy who loved to tease his siblings. While attending school he found time to run track and play basketball even though he had much work to do helping at home on the farm. Wilbert graduated from Albia High School with the class of 1952. At the age of nineteen, Wilbert was united in marriage to his soul mate, Charlene Davis. The couple made their home in Chariton. They were blessed with three children: Derald, Debby, and Denise. He worked at Johnson Machine Works and for several local mechanics. Wilbert then went to Bethany Nazarene Bible College in Bethany, Oklahoma and then served the Lord in Oklahoma City. While there Wilbert helped to build a church and worked at Aero Commander. He had a strong Faith and was able to serve as a Pastor for many years. They moved back to Chariton in 1967. Wilbert began a long and rewarding career working for the Chariton Schools as a custodian at Columbus Elementary. He loved being around the kids and helping the teachers. Wilbert retired from the school in 1996. Wilbert liked to hunt, fish and especially liked to go for walks. He was a talented artist drawing and painting many scenes. Wilbert and Charlene were married for fifty-three and a half years before she left this earth to be with her Savior. They only spent two nights apart during their entire marriage! The past eleven years without Charlene were heart breaking. Wilbert's Christmas Wish came true this week as he was able to come back home to Chariton and then got to go to his permanent home in Heaven with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. Wilbert is survived by his children: Derald (Patti) Stephens of Chariton, Debby (Steve) McDonald of Chariton, and Denise Moore of Grimes; 7 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Kenny Stephens; and sister, Charlene (Harold) McGilverey. He was preceded in death by his wife Charlene Stephens; brother, Dwight Stephens; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Stephens and Marilyn Stephens. Cemetery Details Chariton Cemetery HWY 14 and HWY 34
