Ursula Naomi Roberts was born January 27, 1938 to John Earl and Mabel Davis Roberts in English Township, Lucas County, Iowa. She was named after her two grandmothers, Ursula Wilson Davis and Naomi Lee Roberts. Ursula attended country schools at Graves and Whitebreast schools in English Township through the eighth grade. She graduated from Chariton High School with the class of 1956. She met her husband, Clinton, on the school bus, but had known his Miller nephews and nieces before that time from the Newbern Church. She played flute in the Chariton High School band. After graduation, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for one year. She was a member of the English Happy Helpers 4-H Club for several years and entered sewing, cooking and home furnishing projects at the Derby Fair, the Lucas County Achievement Show and the Iowa State Fair. She wrote the Newbern Community News Column Weekly for the Chariton Newspapers during her teen years. Ursula's mother took her and her brother, Wayne, to the Presbyterian Church in Chariton until she was in about third grade when the family started attending Newbern Community Church. When she was about 10 or 11, she and Wayne attended Vacation Bible School at Whitebreast Christian Church. Under the direction of Winifred MacCumber and Olive VanSyoc, Ursula accepted Christ as her savior. Among people who influenced her life at Newbern were Pastor Delford Day, who drove around the neighborhood and picked up teens for Sunday night youth group, and Joe and Blanche Hotchkiss, who volunteered their time on Saturday evening to work with the teens in the choir. The teens had what today would be called a Praise Band. She played flute, but probably was drowned out by the trumpets and trombone. What they may have lacked in quality, they made up for in quantity (noise wise). Well anyway, they made a "joyful noise unto the Lord." Ursula married her high school sweetheart, Clinton Bingham, on August 3, 1957 at the Baptist parsonage in Russell by Pastor Archie Beals. They lived in Des Moines for a couple months before moving to a little house on the Roberts' farm. Clint was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958 and was sent to Mannheim, Germany, where he was a truck driver. Ursula joined him in Germany for 14 months. She was saved at Vacation Bible School at Whitebreast Christian Church, and both she and Clinton were baptized at the German Baptist Church in Darmstadt, Germany by Army Chaplain Julius Stotsenberg. They joined Grace Baptist Church in Chariton in 1971. Clinton was drafted into the Army in 1958 and went to basic training at Ft. Carson, Colorado. Ursula went with him when he went on to Ft. Ord, California for two months. After he received his orders for Mannheim, Germany, she came back to Iowa and lived with her parents for four months, then flew to Germany to be with him. They lived in a little apartment in Viernheim, Germany and made many wonderful army friends while living there, including Wilfred and Carolyn Naujoks and Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Zophi, who were missionaries at the German Bible Institute (Bibelschule Bergstrasse) at Seeheim, Germany. In 1962, they purchased a house at 810 Osage Avenue in Chariton and completely remodeled it and lived there until 1967. On June 1965, their daughter, Julie Lynnette was born. On Julie's second birthday, the dirt work for the foundation of their home on North Seventh Street began. Julie did not like the noise of the earth moving equipment. Ursula worked over 25 years at National Bank & Trust Company, retiring in 1988. Over the years, she worked in bookkeeping, as a teller, a secretary and loan officer, and an assistant trust officer. Then after a few years, she went to work at the Chariton Newspapers, retiring from there in 2000, but continued to work there from time to time to help out when needed. She learned to be a woodcarver under the direction of her husband, who taught adult education classes. She enjoyed going to carving competitions with him and helped set up displays. They made some great friends as they attended woodcarving shows around Iowa, Kansas City, Omaha, and Wisconsin. Clinton and Ursula were blessed and enjoyed being an active part in the lives of their grandchildren: Garrett, Jennifer and Ryan Poli. They attended school activities, including many softball and baseball games, basketball and soccer, and church activities. Proverbs 17:6 says, "children's children are a crown to the aged…" Garrett, Jennifer and Ryan knew that Grandma had their names written beside that verse in her Bible. Ursula will be greatly missed by her husband of 63 years, Clinton; grandson, Garrett Poli (Carly) and their children, Kale and Laney; grandson, Ryan Poli (Crystal) and their children, Bennie and Silas; brother, Wayne (Diane) Roberts; sisters-in-law: Ruth (Lynn) Crow and Lorna Bingham; nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mabel Roberts; daughter, Julie; granddaughter, Jennifer Nichole Poli; and sister-in-law, Dolories Roberts.
