Following high school, she earned her teaching degree from William Penn College. On April 12, 1947, she married Glenn Haltom and moved to the family farm in Pukerbrush, a small community in northwest Lucas County. To this union four children were born: Kathy, Karen, Janice, and Steve. Tharon was a homemaker and helped worked the farm for 52 years. After the death of her husband, Glenn, she moved to Chariton, Iowa where she lived until 2010. She enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers. The family will always remember her beef and noodles, crème puffs, banana crème pie, and raspberry pie.
