Robert Greubel

August 16, 1937 — November 9, 2011

Memorials are requested to the Lucas County 4-H. Robert Greubel was born August 16, 1937 at the family farm home to Martin and Arretta (Freuh) Greubel and passed away November 9, 2011 at the age of 74 years. Bob attended grade school at the Fairview Country School near his home. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1955. As a young boy Bob was involved in 4-H as well as an active member of the Chariton FFA Chapter throughout high school. Bob married Colene Miller on December 5, 1959 and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2009. They were very blessed with six wonderful children - Craig, Lynn, Lori, Kristi, Jeff, and Mindy. Bob was a lifelong farmer and loved it very much. They continued to live on the family farm and raise their two sons and four daughters and taught them the importance of hard work. The girls would chore right along with the boys. Many times they would hear Dad say, 'Your hair won't stink after being in the hog shed a short time. The wind will blow the smell away.' HA! HA! Along with farming Bob began driving a school bus for the Melcher-Dallas Schools. He enjoyed being a bus driver to several generations over 26 years. As his family grew, he renewed his involvement in 4-H when his oldest son Craig began showing Purebred Herefords. Bob served as a 4-H leader, fair board member, 4-H youth committee member, and beef superintendent for several years. After 20 years of being a 4-H Dad, 1990 marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. Bob and Colene enjoyed watching their grandchildren while Bob continued one of his favorite things, which was announcing the beef show. He would often say, 'He had the best seat in the house'. Over the years Bob also served on the South Central Co-op Board and was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Melcher. Newbern, Iowa has many memories for Bob and Colene. The grocery store was a popular hangout for young people and where they first met. For many years Bob was a member of the Newbern fast pitch softball team and later was their manager. When deciding where to build a home what better place than Newbern, which they call their 'village'. Bob was a dedicated father and grandpa. His grandkids and great grandkids were so special to him. His eyes would light up when they came to visit. Bob especially loved all the babies and there wasn't a baby born and held by Bob that didn't get their ears nibbled on. The love of this grandpa will be remembered forever. Bob is survived by Colene, his wife of 52 years; his children: Craig (Susan) Greubel, Lynn (Bub) Hoskins, Lori (Kevin) Luedtke, Kristi (Dean) Chandler, Jeff (Gina) Greubel, and Mindy (Ryan) Bennett; 17 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and siblings: Darrell (Linda) Greubel, Raymond (Judy) Greubel, Darlene (Emory) Riseley, and Ruth (Jim) Ryun. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Jessica Luedtke, and siblings Norbert, Lucille, and Louise.
