Paul Schaefer

Paul Anthony Schaefer was born March 17, 1926. He grew up helping on his parents' farm. He graduated eighth grade from the Mumford Country School. On January 12, 1949, Paul married the love of his life, Marcella Theresa Knochel in Stratton, Colorado. They were blessed with 69 years together. Paul farmed and worked nights at the Chariton Hy-Vee Wholesale for 22 years until his retirement. He loved his family and instilled them with a strong faith in God. He spent many hours at the dining room table playing cards with family and friends. One of Paul's favorite past times was cracking black walnuts that he gave to the kids for the holidays. Paul had a passion for guitar. He played lead guitar for several bands. Not only was he a talented guitar player, but also played a pump organ for church as a young man. Paul inspired his children and others with his love of classic country music, fishing, hunting, gardening, and country life. He also enjoyed the companionship of a succession of Keeshounds, Fritz I, II, and III. He had a genuine interest in everyone he met and was well loved by everyone who knew him. On March 9th, 2018 Paul went home just short of his 92nd birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Della Schaefer, and his sister, Marie Terrell. He is survived by his wife, Marcella, children Patricia (Alton) Ayer, Justin (Olivia) Schaefer, and Kenneth (Shelly) Schaefer, eight grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lacona. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona. A rosary service will be at 7:00 p.m. Interment will immediately follow the service at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Lacona.
