Paul DeVore

Paul DeVore, of Chariton, passed away September 23, 2016 at the age of 95. Graveside memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Columbia Cemetery, Family will receive friends on Friday evening after the service from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Paul's memory to his family to be designated at a later date. Paul Floyd DeVore was born August 2, 1921 to Clyde and Ethel DeVore in VanWert, Iowa. Paul was the fourth child of six children born to the couple. The family resided in Clarke, Decatur and Wayne counties. He attended school through the eighth grade. At the age of twenty-one, Paul enlisted in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in October of 1943. In April of 1950, Paul was united in marriage to Dorothy Edwards. To this union, three children were born: Steven, Stan and Paula. Paul and Dorothy raised their family on a farm north of Chariton, not far from Columbia. In addition to farming and gardening, he was a jack of all trades and did everything from mechanical to construction work. If he was able, he would help family and friends whenever they needed it. Paul retired from the Veteran's Hospital in Knoxville after 32 years working as a security/firefighter for them. After retirement, Paul enjoyed spending time with his family. He helped to raise his oldest granddaughter Nicki and was a very active part of his grandchildren and great grandchildren's lives. In 1995, he and Dorothy built a home close to his son, Stan and family, to be there full time for his grandchildren, Corey and Kristy. He loved to travel with his wife Dorothy and his granddaughter Nicki. They took many bus tours together. Paul and Dorothy spent over fifty-five years together before her passing in 2005. They were active in politics, especially during election time, when they helped at the election site in Pleasant Township. Paul enjoyed spending time in Knoxville with friends at coffee time at McDonalds, the sale barn, and in Chariton at Hardees and Hy-Vee. Especially when he could take his grandchildren with him. In his later years, he volunteered at the Chariton Nursing Home and at the Lucas County Senior Center. He loved to socialize. He loved to tell tall tales, a few fibs and enjoyed bantering with family. He participated in 4th of July celebrations held at the farm. He stayed active helping put up hay, sawing and splitting wood, and helping his granddaughter's (Nicki) family harvest. He loved spending time with his dog, Wishbone, and cooking meals for the family. Paul was a member of the Knoxville American Legion. When he was eighty-five years young, Paul decided he'd like to parachute out of a plane. He did it again at eighty-eight. He was disappointed when they did not return as he wanted to parachute again at age ninety. He lived a very full life and was extremely loved by all his family, including his dog, Wishbone. Paul is survived by his children: Steven (Janet) DeVore of Lincoln, NE, Stan (Linda) DeVore of Chariton, and Paula (Tim) Chambers of Knoxville; grandchildren: Nicki (Monte) Brown, Corey (Amanda) DeVore, Kristy (Alex) Bear, Stacey DeVore, Kayla (John) Gidley, and Jason DeVore; great-grandchildren: Devon Brown, Trayton Brown, Zoey Gidley, Lylah Gidley, and Carly Bear; sisters, Muriel Sponsler of Osceola, and June Halfterty of Numa; and his dog, Wishbone.
