Mildred Lohr Tuttle Hook, the daughter of Stanley and Maggie (Buckingham) Lohr was born February 11, 1923. She was raised in a Christian, hard working farm family. Mildred attended Pleasant Ridge School, then Allerton High School for two years and graduated from Corydon HS in 1940 with a normal training certificate, but could not teach at that point because she was not yet eighteen. She worked for AAA, Farm Bureau, and Northwestern Bell. She was united in marriage with Melvin Tuttle in Princeton, MO March 16, 1942. To this union two children were born, Nancy Kay and Norman Ray. In the spring of 1953 she was asked to substitute teach 2nd grade in Williamson and with her salary of $168, she started college classes and earned fifteen hours. She was hired to teach in Union school, where she taught nine grades in every subject for four years and with support from her family managed to acquire two years of college credits. She was hired to teach in Chariton. She continued working for her degree and graduated from Drake University in 1960, the same year that Nancy graduated from high school. She taught 4th and 5th grades at Franklin for 2 years, 6th grade at Columbus for 4 years and 8th grade language Arts for sixteen years. She retired in the spring of 1979 after spending twenty-six years doing a job she thoroughly enjoyed. Many of her students still think of her as their favorite teacher. She loved being a mother and grandmother. She and Melvin loved ballroom dancing and spent many enjoyable times dancing and playing cards with friends. She enjoyed playing golf and supporting her husband and son at horse and pony pulling contests. Melvin died in 1986 and Mildred substituted as a teacher and worked part-time for Hy-Vee security. In 1989, she met Jesse Hook of Corydon and they married in 1990. Since family meant so much to her, this was very special. She had seven more children and many grandchildren, added to her family, who have been very good to her. During their marriage they were able to travel extensively. Mildred was never one to let the grass grow under her feet and was a member of the Corydon Garden Club, Methodist Church, Quilt Guild and a bridge club. She pieced many quilts and wall hangings and gave them as gifts to her family. Playing the piano was also a favorite pastime and she amazed those who listened with her talent and ability to play by ear. Mildred passed away on February 6, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, a baby brother Robert, brother Delmar Lohr, both husbands, son-in law Carl McWhorter, and son Norman. She is survived by daughter Nancy McWhorter, Norman's companion Rosemary Swainey, grandchildren Kelli McWhorter (Rick Clark), David Tuttle (Shay Dutton), and Denise (Philip) Storm, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
