Mabel Clucas

September 1, 1911 — December 23, 2008

Mabel was born September 1, 1911 in What Cheer, Iowa to Dow and Ida Schlaser Beever. She graduated from What Cheer High School in 1929. She was married to Frank Clucas in January 1944. Frank passed away in 1952. She worked for Teletype Corporation in Chicago (now Lucent Technologies) and retired in 1976. Mabel moved to Des Moines in 1998. Mabel belonged to the What Cheer Methodist Church growing up, the North Shore American Legion Auxiliary in Chicago for over 45 years, a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Worthy Matron since 1953, and Pioneers life member since 1970. She enjoyed life, people, always had a smile on her face, and was quick with her witty humor. She was always very positive and at peace with life even while she was battling cancer over the last several years. Mabel died peacefully in her sleep on December 23, 2008 after a few short hours at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; step sons: Jerry and Frankie; step grandson Jim; a baby brother; and sisters: Cora Blaylock, Hazel Courtney, and Blanche Telin. She is survived by her sister Millie Irving of Chariton; many nieces and nephews; relatives in Chicago; and step grandchildren: Tom, Bill, Dick, and Danny Clucas.
