Services for Lilly Southerly, 97, of Chariton were Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Interment was in the Murray Cemetery. Lilly Leona Rice daughter of Charles Levi and Ethel Elsie Rice was born on October 5, 1914 in Cincinnati, Iowa. At a young age she was baptized in the Methodist Church in Murray. She lived most of her life in Union, Clarke, Polk, and Lucas counties, but also lived in California and Nebraska. Lilly worked at Snodon's Sewing Factory in Osceola and, Armours Factory in Osceola, and at Sears in Des Moines making drapes. She was very talented in many different ways. She sewed and crocheted making many things for her family. Lilly was also a good carpenter making a beautiful set of kitchen cabinets for her home in Murray. She had a green thumb and loved flowers and plants both in and outside the home. She enjoyed canning vegetables and fruit. She loved country music and loved to dance. Lilly also enjoyed birds, especially raising her canaries. Lilly enjoyed life and always made the most of it. She married Marion Russell Overton on February 1, 1932 in Creston, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Patty Lou, Charley Matthew, Donna Lea, and Donald Lee. Marion passed away on January 27, 1966. Lilly was married to James Southerly in 1969 and he passed away in 1977. Lilly lived at the Autumn Park Apartments in Chariton for the last 15 years. Lilly passed away October 22, 2011 at the Legacy Lodge in Chariton after staying there for 11 months at the age of 97. She is survived by her children: Patty Deemer of Russell and Charley (Pat) Overton of Mingo; 11 grandchildren: Shirley (Richard) Sibert, Tracy (Laura) Deemer, Terry (Patricia) Overton, Becky (Roger) Perrin, Chris (Don) Noftsger, Trisha Overton, Doug (Karen) Houck, Russell Houck, Brian Houck, Greg (Teresa) Houck, Connie (Dan) Novacek, and Cindy Deemer; 29 great grandchildren; 17 great great grandchildren; and a great great great grandchild. A brother James (Lois) Rice of Creston also survives her. Lilly was preceded in death by husbands: Marion Overton in 1966 and James Southerly in 1977; her parents: Charles and Ethel Rice; daughter, Donna Houck; sons-in-law: Donald Houck and Clarence Deemer; daughter-in-law Ruby Overton; infant son, Donald Overton; and grandson, Randy Deemer. Siblings: Mary Rickets, Maxine Ries, Maude Bragg, Betty KenKennon, Vernon Rice, and Charles Rice also preceded her in death.
