Lila Maelene was born in Hopejoy, Iowa to Ronald and Lucille Ashby Stierwalt. The family moved to a farm near Newbern, Iowa. As a little girl, Lila contracted poliovirus, which caused nerve damage. Although this changed Lila's life, it didn't slow her down. Lila graduated from Chariton High School in 1959 and went on to receive her cosmetology license from Thompson's School of Beauty in Des Moines. She proudly opened her own salon in Newbern. Lila was united in marriage to Ken Ruch. The couple was blessed with two children, Allen and Karla. Lila continued to work in the salon, but also helped with the office work for Ken's plumbing and heating company. The family lived in the Newbern area until 1983 when they moved to Indianola. Lila was always a very social person. She enjoyed visiting with friends, family, and her church circle. Lila was a member of the "Better Homes Club". She was also active in the Polio Survivors Club. Lila surrounded herself with people who made her laugh. Lila enjoyed camping, especially at the Iowa State Fair. She stayed busy with sewing projects, cooking, and canning. Above all else, Lila enjoyed time spent with her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She looked forward to family gatherings and keeping her grandchildren overnight. She will be missed dearly. Lila is survived by her husband, Ken Ruch of Indianola; daughter, Karla (Doug) Bingham-Halverson; grandsons, Derrik (Shelley) Bingham and Jerod (Hannah) Bingham; great grandchildren: Carter, Callen, Braylon, Benton, Bryston, and Nolan; and brother, Roger (Mary) Stierwalt.
