Leonard "Dick" Estes Jr

Leonard D. 'Dick' Estes Jr., 81 of Indianola and formerly of Lacona passed away Thursday, July 03, 2014 at Taylor House - Hospice in Des Moines. Leonard was born on March 16, 1933 in Rural Warren County to Leonard Sr. & Rosa (Glasgow) Estes. He received his education from Dallas High School graduating in 1951. Leonard was a veteran of the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War. On July 14, 1963 he was united in marriage to Gloria Green in Ames, Iowa. Leonard was employed over the years at Firestone as a pipe fitter until his retirement in 1995. In his spare time, Leonard enjoyed reading, genealogy and coin collecting. He was best described as a working man, He also enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with mechanical things to learn how they operated. Leonard enjoyed attending his sons sporting events when they were kids and coached little league baseball for a time. He even found time to help drive a school bus for a few years. Leonard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lacona and the American Legion Hall Post #165 in Indianola. Survivors include his wife Gloria of Indianola, sons: Brian J. Estes (Jennifer) of Indianola, Adam K. Estes of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, grandchildren: Morgan L. Estes of Indianola, Hannah M. Estes of Indianola, Kelsie J. Estes of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Trenton D. Estes of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, two sisters: Cecile Barnhouse(Lew) of Arvada, Colorado, Wilma Hunter of Colorado Springs, Colorado, many nieces, nephews and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Alice Smith, Maxine Smith, Rose Carl and James Estes. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 7, 2014 at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona. Interment will be in Motor Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Lacona.
