Lee Roberts, formerly of Columbia, Iowa died October 17 at the age of 98, having lived a long, productive and happy life. Lee was much loved by his family and a lifetime of friends. Born on a farm near Gosport to Josie Pearl (Beebout) and Forest Roberts, Lee learned early to be imaginative and work hard, by age 15 he had his first business as a trucker, hauling livestock, coal and grain with a Model A truck. Within a couple of years he got a V8 Ford truck and began hiring other drivers to help with the business. Along with his parents, he opened a service station on Highway 14 near the Columbia turn-off and from that first business came his life's work serving Columbia as Grocer, Postmaster and Fire Chief. In 1940 Lee married Kathleen (Kay) Wilson of Dallas, a young school teacher. Their marriage of 68 years brought them two daughters, three grandsons four great grandchildren and a lifetime of nurturing and being nurtured in return. Lee served in the U.S. Navy 1943-1946, training in Farragut, Idaho and sailing on the USS Vincennes in the South Pacific. He loved the travel and formed lasting friendships with three other sailors and their families, reuniting annually for decades. The last 18 years of Lee's life were spent in Pleasantville where he thoroughly enjoyed being near family, especially the birth and growth of each of his four great grandchildren. He gardened, bowled, and acquired even more friendships. Lee was an avid Cardinals fan and shared their indomitable spirit. Lee is preceded in death by his wife Kay, sister Georgia and nephew, Gary Benson. Those left to remember him include his daughters: Sharon (Bob) Hutchings of Pleasantville and Virginia (Jeremy) Tupper of Seattle, WA., grandsons: Scott (Deb) Hutchings of Pleasantville, Brent (Darcy) Hutchings of Boone, and Sye Peterson of Seattle, WA., and his great grandchildren: Tessa and Josie Hutchings of Pleasantville, and Casey and Joey Hutchings of Boone.
