Kathy Schurman

Kathy Schurman, of rural Lacona, passed away June 16, 2018 at the age of 62. Services will be held Thursday, June 21st at 10:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 20th, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lacona Fire and Rescue and the Lacona Library. Kathryn Louise Schurman was born on September 22, 1955 to Charles and Shirley McPherson in Des Moines, Iowa. She was raised alongside her brothers, Richard and Robert on a farm north of Indianola, Iowa. Kathy graduated with the Indianola High School class of 1973. After graduating from Indianola, Kathy worked for the State of Iowa and the Warren County Engineers Office. Kathy was married to Dennis Schurman on July 31, 1976. They lived three miles west of Lacona where they raised two children. Kathy and Dennis enjoyed 42 years of marriage and their loving relationship was evident to anyone who knew them. Throughout her life Kathy enjoyed traveling. Whether family vacations or trips across the country with her close friends no trip commenced without advanced planning. She had recently returned from one of her favorites - hiking and exploring in Utah and the Grand Canyon. Other memorable adventures include Vancouver, Seattle, and San Francisco. Friends noted that this recent trip was planned with her friend Darla with a daily itinerary detailed down to the minute! Following her passing, journals were found documenting the entire experience, further describing her enjoyment of friendship and new experiences. While always part of her life, the importance of fitness and health increased with age. She could be found walking or taking exercise classes nearly every day. She even recently purchased a new bike rack for her car to add a new dimension to her routine. Her energetic attitude and positive outlook revolved around her strong self-discipline and desire for improvement. Kathy retired from the workforce but she did not retire from life. Her days were largely kept busy spending time with and helping family. She adored her four grandchildren and spent time with them often. "Granny" was always present for t-ball games, extra-long cuddles, and last-minute babysitting. Birthdays and holidays occasionally included a thoughtfully "crafted" custom made gift, including one of a kind paintings or custom lawn ornaments. Her kind soul was ever present in the time she spent caring for, visiting, or speaking with her own mother nearly every day. She dedicated countless hours ensuring her mother's well-being and keeping her company. After completing a long day of helping others, she loved spending time with her husband enjoying their beautiful home. Kathy was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and will be dearly missed by so many. She is survived by her mother, Shirley McPherson; husband, Dennis Schurman; daughter, Kym (Ryan) Dresback; son, Scott (Abbie) Schurman; brothers, Bob (Sherry) and Dick McPherson; nephew, Andy McPherson; niece, Sarah McPherson; and grandchildren, Dylan Dresback, Reid Schurman, Riley Schurman, and Olivia Dresback.
