Services for Iola Becker, 96, of Milo will be held Friday, December 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Indianola. Interment will be at the Belmont Cemetery, rural Milo. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Milo. Memorials are requested to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Iola was born June 1, 1921 at home in rural Lacona, Iowa. She attended country school near her home. Iola married Richard Becker on February 5, 1941 and they were blessed with 5 children: Arlan, John, Jack, Charlotte, and LuAnne. Iola and Richard made their home near Milo where they farmed and raised their family. She was a hard worker helping on the farm, planting a huge vegetable garden, caring for her many flower beds, sewing many well-remembered items of clothing for her children, keeping her home tastefully decorated and shining, and tirelessly feeding her ever growing family. She even raised a few chickens. Everyone remembers the big meals of meat and potatoes or chicken and noodles with homemade bread. Cinnamon rolls or raised donuts were a special treat, and hand-decorated cakes were a must for everyone's birthdays. She loved being a homemaker and usually had a dust cloth or paint brush in her hand. Iola was a longtime member of the The Agenda Club, a ladies' neighborhood social club. Following retirement when she and Richard moved to Milo, they continued to maintain a beautiful home and shared their favorite activities of square dancing, bowling, playing cards, or a game or two of pool in the basement with their many relatives and friends. They also participated in several different local civic and social clubs. They enjoyed traveling in the earlier years when they were able. Iola hand crocheted specially designed afghans for each of her children and grandchildren and spent many hours babysitting her grandchildren, attending their many programs and activities, and clicking many, many photos. She and Richard were inseparable during their 73 years of marriage. Their love for each other and their family was unending. She was a great mother, very loving and nurturing and very interested in each of her children's lives - encouraging their various endeavors and letting her pride in them shine through, even in her final months. The kids will admit that she might have had her hands full when they were young, watching over them, and sometimes even Richard, like the time when he was determined to go parasailing at nearly age 80. Throughout her life she always had a deep and abiding faith in her Lord and Savior. Iola was active in the Lutheran Church - both at St. Paul's in Germantown and Mt. Calvary in Indianola - making sure that the family attended services regularly in their Sunday best, helping out at church suppers, serving as president of the Ladies Aid, and teaching Sunday School and Bible School. Iola passed away on December 3, 2017 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her beloved children: Jack (Orbie) Becker, Charlotte (Greg) Weaklend, LuAnne (Merrill) Heemstra, and Karen Becker, daughter-in-law; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Helen Conklin and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceding Iola in death were her parents: Ed and Nannie Langebartels; husband, Richard; sons: John Becker and Arlan Becker; and siblings: Raymond (Eula) Langebartels, Fern (Glen) Nolte, Earnie (Guyola) Langebartels, Eddie (Geneva) Langebartels, and Bertha (Guy) Hartz.
