Memorials may be made in care of Howard's family. Howard was born November 29, 1946 to George and Imogene Whitmore Phippen. He grew up in the Des Moines area attending Lincoln, East, and Exira schools. He trained as a carpenter and was a member of Carpenters Local 106. He did carpentry work for many years. Howard was married to Peggy Kimzey on January 11, 1968 in Omaha. They were blessed with three sons: Rick, Gary, and Rob. He loved to take care of his family. As they raised their children, Howard made sure they were taught to hunt and fish. He would take them camping, and would always join in on the fun with ATVs. The boys thought he might have wrecked the 3-wheeler more than they did. He and Peggy loved to go square dancing. He also worked for the Southeast Warren Schools. He loved to work at the elementary school, all the kids would line up to make sure they could wave and say hi to him when they went into the school. The death of his wife, Peggy in September of 2011 was devastating to him. He eventually met his special friend, Norma Matney of Virginia and decided to make the move to Virginia. Although he missed his family and friends in Milo he found a needed change and great friends in this move. He loved the beauty of rural Virginia. Howard passed away on July 14, 2018 in Roanoke, Virginia. He will be greatly missed by his friend, Norma Matney; sons: Rick (Tiffany) Phippen of Indianola, Gary Phippen of Waukee, and Rob Phippen of Des Moines; eight grandchildren: Justin, Nikki, Shane, Brant, Carver, Laura, Taylor, and Gavin; three great grandchildren: Logan, Kylie, and Quinn; siblings: Frank, Karen, and Dixie; and many relatives and friends. Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, and sister, Georgia. Cemetery Details Goodes Chapel Cemetery Visitation
