Howard Dop

d. September 17, 2014

Howard L. Dop, age 90 of rural Knoxville, died on September 17, 2014. Howard was born in rural Jasper County to Peter and Josephine Dop, the oldest son of 8 children. His family moved to Marion County south of Pleasantville and east of Fairview Church in 1939. After the fall harvest of 1943, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country during World War II, serving overseas in Italy. Upon returning from World War II, Howard married Betty Holland, the neighbor girl. The day after their wedding, the newlyweds headed for California for one year, where Howard worked on a large ranch and Betty taught. They returned to Marion County to become life-long residents, soon starting a family with sons Joel and Lowell (deceased). He was a skilled livestock farmer as well as being devoted to the stewardship of the good earth. Howard devoted his life to and expressed his pride of family, country, his and Betty's Pinehill Farm operation, neighborhood, community, and Fairview Church. Fairview Church became an important part of Howard's life early on when he walked to church meeting Ellis Jordan to light the 'fire' before the service on bitter cold winter mornings. Howard generously shared his time serving on many state, county, and church boards and committees. Howard and Betty enjoyed traveling, particularly to the Western United States and Canada as well as casual drives through the rural countryside, often with admiration for well-kept farmsteads and with a critical eye toward ill-kept fences. Howard is survived by Betty, his wife of 67 years, son Joel, grandson Monte, and brothers and sisters: Dorothy Handel, Roy Dop, Harry Dop, Irma Williams, and Kenneth Dop. Howard requested that any contributions in his name be made to Fairview Church (Pleasantville, Iowa) or Central Iowa Hospice (Knoxville, Iowa). A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fairview Christian Church south of Pleasantville. A visitation is scheduled for Friday, September 19 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas. Interment will be at the Lincoln Cemetery near Knoxville.
