Evelyn Stark

December 12, 1948 — March 9, 2021

Martha Evelyn Stark, 72, of Lucas passed away unexpectedly on March 9, 2021. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. at Fry Hill Cemetery in Lucas, with a visitation prior from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the John L. Lewis Museum in Lucas, the Lucas Community Betterment or the Lucas Presbyterian Church. Evelyn was born on December 12, 1948, at Yocom Hospital in Chariton, Iowa, and was the third of four daughters born to Donald and Louise (Halls) Stark. She grew up in Lucas, Iowa, and graduated from Chariton High School in the class of 1967. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1971 with a degree in elementary education. She lived in the family home in Lucas for her entire life except for during her college years and a couple of years when she lived in Corydon. With her passing, there will be no member of the Stark family living in Lucas for the first time since the late 1800s. At the time of her graduation from college, teaching jobs were in short supply so she served as a substitute in the Chariton schools and then taught special reading in the Corydon schools for several years in the 1970s. When funding for the reading program was cut, she was asked by Jerry Baker, the owner of the Farmers & Miners Bank in Lucas, to help him out at the bank part-time until another teaching job came along. She then remained at the bank for the rest of her working life. She continued working there after the bank was bought by Community State Bank and split her time between the Lucas and Indianola banks until she retired several years ago. Evelyn was a faithful member of the Lucas Presbyterian Church. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed sewing and making quilts. She provided the quilt for the raffle at the annual Labor Day Festival in Lucas for a number of years and was chosen as the Grand Marshall of the parade at the Festival in 2012. She was known for her sewing skills and for baking the family's Swedish rye bread recipe and, of course, for her chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed the occasions when her family could all gather together. She was kind, helpful, independent, and marched to her own drummer. Her smile, kindness and helpful ways will be missed, along with her memory of past family events and milestones. She is survived by three sisters: Ida Fetters of Russell, Margaret Caylor of Chariton, and Donna Test of Des Moines. Also nieces and nephews Bradley (Becky) Fetters of Clio, Craig Fetters of Lucas, Cindy (Scott) Goolsby of Ely, Amanda (Gerry) Hambly of Waterloo, and Adam (Caitlynn) Test of Clive; two aunts, Evelyn Dooley of San Jose, California and Janice Halls of Weldon, along with several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers-in-law Jerald Fetters, Butch Caylor and Allan Test; niece Tammy Jeanes; and a number of aunts and uncles. We request that everyone reading this please drive with care and always double-check behind you when driving in reverse. Cemetery Details Fry Hill Cemetery Visitation
