Elzora Town

Elzora Town of Milo was born the 19th of May 1913. She was the ninth child of James and Nora (Edleman) McCormick. She passed away the 21st of December 2012 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 99 years 7 months and 8 days. According to Elzora's wishes there will be a Celebration of Life December 27, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Milo Community Center. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. In Lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Southeast Warren School Scholarship Foundation or to the Milo Memories Museum. Elzora attended country school in Lucas County, Chariton High School, Chariton Junior College, Cedar Falls College (now known as University of Northern Iowa), University of Boulder in Colorado, College in Greeley, Colorado, Simpson College, and Drake University. She spent her entire life in education. She taught in several schools in rural Lucas County as well as in Attica, and in Britt, Iowa. Her teaching took her to Hammond, Indiana, Chicago, Illinois, and Caracas, Venezuela, South America. Her teaching covered 44 years, 22 of which were in Milo and Southeast Warren Schools. She studied a year learning to read and write Braille, after which she transcribed library books and textbooks. She transcribed books for 13 years for the Iowa Commission for the Blind. Elzora volunteered in the Milo Public Library and the Samaritan Care Center in Indianola. Elzora was married to O. Fair Town on the 2nd of April 1953. She and her husband took into their home four of Fair's grandchildren, who lived with them until they reached adulthood. She often said the children kept them young and considered them a blessing. The grandchildren are Charlotte who married Kent Beske who lives in Sioux City. They have two children: Wesley and Deborah (Pat) Brobst. Deborah Has three children: Lauren, Christian, and Claire. Terry (Linda) live in Wellsburg, Iowa. They have one son, Brady (Dawn). The third grandchild, Leslie (Pat) lives in Milo. Leslie has a son, Nathan (Jessica) who have a son Etlyn. The youngest grandchild, Mary Lou (Joe) lives in Morrison, Colorado. Mary Lou has two step daughters: Kristi and Carla. Elzora is preceded in death by her husband; parents; seven brothers: Floyd, Wayne, Harland, Gerald, Thomas, Keith, and James; five sisters: Lueva, Lavena. Beulah, Adeline D.O., and Maedene; and a step son-in-law, Fair Etland Town. Surviving are a brother: Kenneth (Martha), three sisters: Leola (Gail) Mikesell, Eulalia (Paul) Holmquist, and Lois (James) Akins; her grandchildren: Charlotte (Kent), Terry (Linda), Leslie (Pat), and Mary Lou (Joe); her great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and many family members and a host of friends. Elzora has given freely of her time and means to the Dr. A.L. McCormick-Ohnemus Community Center/Milo Memories Museum. She gave numerous books to the Milo Public Library as well as hundreds of books to the many children she knew and loved. She believed books made great citizens. As according to her wishes she wants to thank everyone who came into her life. She said you helped her to be who she was. She was proud to be in the McCormick family.
