Funeral services for Donald Crawford, 86, of rural Lucas, will be Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Norwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation. Donald Leland Crawford was born March 14, 1933 in rural Lucas County to Brice and Berniece Shelton Crawford. He attended country school and Norwood Consolidated Schools before going to Chariton and graduating from Chariton High School in 1951. On June 27, 1952 he was married to Frances Koble. In July of 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After serving overseas in Korea for a year, he returned to San Diego and served as a Navy Corpsman at the U S Naval Hospital. He then transferred to Camp Pendleton where he served with the Marine Corp., finishing his service in 1956. Don and Frances were blessed with two daughters: Debra Sue and Lisa. After the service Don worked at Pittsburgh Steel in Des Moines and started farming near Milo. They bought the farm near Norwood in 1976. He enjoyed raising purebred Angus Cattle on the farm. Don also worked at John Deere in Ankeny for 28 years retiring in 1992. Throughout their lives, Don and Frances enjoyed traveling. They had been to all 50 states, taking many family vacation road trips to see the sights, and had most recently visited Alaska. He also enjoyed the Iowa State Fair and the Tuesday of the Angus show was known as Crawford day as the entire family gathered at the fair to see the show and enjoy the fair. Don was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading about history and the Korean War. He had a great love for his family. Don was quiet and reserved, but when he spoke he showed how much he cared and treasured his family. He was ornery, fun, and good humored. His grandchildren remember checking on the cattle and not leaving until they counted each one. They also remember driving lessons that involved a trip to town and not leaving until they had ice cream. The grandkids cherished receiving his weekly phone calls and him and Frances attending their activities. Don had a deep faith and love for the Lord, studying his bible and devotions daily. Everyone who knew him can attest that he lived his life as an example for Christ. Don and Frances faithfully attended, and are members of, the United Methodist Church in Indianola. In recent years, they've attended the Norwood Methodist Church. Don passed away suddenly at his home on March 30, 2019. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 67 years, Frances Crawford; daughters: Debbie (Randy) Foster and Lisa Crawford; four grandchildren: Brandt (Lindsay) Foster, Alex (Kayla) Foster, Sydney Elson (PJ Frederick), and Lydia Elson; three great grandchildren: Crawford Foster, Hayes Foster, and Vivienne Foster; a half-sister, Carol (Dave) Peregoy; sister-in-law, Rosemary Hochstein; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Brice and Berniece Hass Crawford. Cemetery Details Norwood Cemetery Lucas, IA 50151
