Clifton Brewer

Clifton Edward Brewer Jr., age 82 of Chariton, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. The son of Clifton Sr. and Martha Wauneta (Byers) Brewer was born December 23, 1931 at home in Belinda, Iowa. Clif graduated from Chariton High School in 1949. He served in the National Guard from 1947 to 1956 and completed his career as Master Sergeant in the Intelligence Headquarters Company in Chariton. He was united in marriage August 21, 1955 to Wanda Lee Betterton of Knoxville. To this union he was blessed with six children: Fred, Dan, Debbie, Ronnie, Denise, and Joe. Clif loved to hunt- deer, elk, pheasant, and crow. Clif grew up farming with his father and brothers Richard and Kenneth. Later he rented and worked a number of farms in Lucas and Wayne County. While farming, he worked on the side remodeling Jack Prather's (a cousin) house. In 1955, he built his family's first home. After this, farming became a hobby and carpentry became his profession. He built numerous houses in central Iowa and crafted beautiful cabinetry and woodworking projects. Clif was an avid reader, cribbage player, and history buff. He belonged to the Lucas County Historical Society and the Lucas County Tractor Club. Those left to honor his memory are his wife Wanda of 58 years, children: Fred (Sherry) of Lucas, Dan (Brenda) of Chariton, Debbie (Rod) Evitt of Corydon, Denise (Steve) Lazear of Chariton, and Joe (Rosana) of Chariton; 12 grandchildren: Jodi, Justin, Wesley, Jennifer, Katie, Erica, A.J., Lee, Luke, Ann, Jon, and Allan and 11 great-grandchildren: Emma, Lincoln, Shawndra, Arianna, Nadia, Brady, Hallie, Lane, Sawyer, Miley, and Tripp; his brothers Richard (Carolyn) of Trenton, Missouri and Kenneth of Indianola; sister in laws: Joy (Barney) Vickroy of Knoxville, Linda (Leland) Shelton of Chariton and brother-in-law John (Kathy) of Indianola and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Those that preceded him in death were his parents, his infant brothers Marvin and Keith, and his son Ronnie. A Celebration of Life Service will take place 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 21, 2014 at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Bethel Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Chariton Historical Society or to the Chariton Public Library.
