Ben was the youngest child, born at the onset of the Great Depression on December 26, 1929, in Melcher, Iowa, to James Clay and Sarah Nevada (Rivers) Hoover. Weighing 3 lbs., the doctor told his Mom to wrap him in cotton, place him in a shoebox behind the stove-that he wouldn't survive until morning. With a strong will to live and love of life, Ben proved otherwise. Knowing no stranger, Ben loved people and found something in common with all whom he met. The friendships formed through all his activities, he so enjoyed. Ben's intact memory, knowledge of local heritage and history, and his talent of sharing stories will be missed. He loved life-organizing and hosting gatherings, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and horse racing. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and meticulous gardener, generously providing the fruits of his labor to family and friends. Ben graduated from Melcher High School in 1948 and was proud of his service in the Korean War. He married Ellen Teresa Colbert in 1954 and welcomed four children into the world. Ben worked at Maytag in Newton for 38 years, retiring in 1987, continuing to work part time at Northcote Locker and as a Maytag repairman in Melcher. He was a member of the UAW Local 997, the American Legion Post 632, and the VFW. Ben is survived by Ellen, his wife of 63 years; children Rhonda (Kelly) Conrad, Brenda (Bruce) Woodward, Brent (Kris) Hoover, and Teresa Adams; ten grandchildren: Erin (Keith) Crawford, Katie (Shawn) Kerrigan, Abby Conrad, Grant Woodward, Alex (Amber) Hoover, Anthony Hoover, Alan Hoover, Mitchell Adams, Benjamin Adams, and Joseph Adams; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, two brothers, and five sisters. Cemetery Details Bauer Catholic Cemetery Bauer, IA
