Richard "Duke" Barnhart

April 6, 1943 — August 20, 2016

Richard 'Duke' Barnhart, of Chariton, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the age of 73. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Chariton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Duke's family. Richard "Duke" Dale Barnhart was born April 6, 1943 in Greentop, Missouri to Dewey and Meda Barnhart. He was one of seven children born to the couple. Duke grew up in Lucas County, Iowa. He played high school football and wrestled during all four years of high school. During his senior year, Duke made it to the state wrestling tournament. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1960. Duke was blessed with three children: Robin, Jodi, and Jamie. Duke later married Sherrie Lesher and was blessed with daughter, Chelsy (Brian) Arnold and three grandchildren: Reese, Ryker, and Clara. Duke made his living in construction as a concrete finisher. When he wasn't working he enjoyed playing pool, deer hunting, and fishing. He loved the outdoors and driving around the country sightseeing and looking for deer. Above all else, Duke enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Chelsy, and her family. When Chelsy was on summer vacation from teaching, Duke visited her and his three grandchildren every day. He will be greatly missed. Duke is survived by his daughter, Chelsy (Brian) Arnold of Chariton; sister, Shirley (Raymond) Waag of Akron; brother, Bud Barnhart of Anderson, Missouri; brother, Charles 'Chub' Barnhart of Chariton; brother, Clyde (Linda) Barnhart of Chariton; sister, Jean (Larry) Wheeldon of Chariton; 3 grandchildren: Reese, Ryker, and Clara; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marlene Haltom; and brother-in-law, Robert Haltom. Cemetery Details Chariton Cemetery HWY 14 and HWY 34
