Karen was born December 5, 1948 in Burlington, Iowa to Henry and Ilene (McCullough) Carter. She grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Tech High School in 1967. She was a self taught EEG Tech and then continued her schooling to gain her certification as a Register Nurse. She enjoyed working as a nurse and loved taking care of her patients. Karen worked for many places including: Calvin Community, The Village, Windsor Manor, Health Ways, and Orchard Place just to name a few. Before meeting John Schurman in 1989 she lived many places. They were married in August of 1989 and made their home in rural Lacona where they built their new home. Karen and John were soul mates. They loved every minute together and especially enjoyed traveling the world together. John said he and Karen did almost everything on their bucket list except to travel down the Danube River. They had been to Australia, New Zealand, Rome, the Greek Isles, Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Mexico. Karen always made traveling a memorable adventure and she enjoyed traveling with family as well. They also traveled through out the United States and liked to stay in Bed and Breakfasts and visit Tea Rooms. Karen was full of life and loved meeting new people and being with old friends. This went right along with her love of being part of the Red Hat Ladies. She thoroughly enjoyed this club and not only was she honored as the Red Hat Queen, she truly lived up to the title. She loved to go shopping to dress up for the meetings and social events and often bought purple dresses and red hats on her vacations. Karen will be greatly missed by her mother, Ilene Carter; husband, John Schurman; children: Molly (Nick) Airhart and Floyd Ellis; her brother, Charles (Tammie) Carter; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Edward Carter in 1980. Cemetery Details Rosemount Cemetery 22925 Quebec St.
