Frances Evelyn Oxenreider passed away March 24, 2015 at her farm home near Oakley at the age of 93. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton with Pastor Darrell Sams officiating. Interment will be in the Oxenreider family plot of Mount Zion Cemetery of Liberty Township. Evelyn was born February 11, 1922 to parents Worth Sprott Mitchell and Laura Schreck Mitchell. She was reared with her 11 brothers and sisters on farms on Warren and Whitebreast Township. She accepted Christ as a youth while attending Otterbein United Brethren Church of Benton Township. As an adult, she worshipped at several neighborhood churches including the Chariton Christian Union Church at the end of her life. Evelyn's early schooling took place in Union School and Freedom School of Warren Township. Upon graduation from Chariton High School in 1941, she received a country school teaching certificate from the high school and its upgrading at Simpson College for new state standards. She taught in rural schools of Lucas County for four years, riding a horse from the family home to the school daily in the fall and spring. On October 3, 1945 she married Vernard L. Oxenreider, a combat marine wounded in the fighting for Guam during World War II. The couple purchased the Liberty Township farm that became the family home for the next seventy years. Four children, Beth Anne, Peggy Joan, Craig, and Roe, were born to Evelyn and Vernard and shared in the experiences of rural life that included raising livestock and poultry, 4-H club activities, and the country and state fair. Evelyn enjoyed raising chickens, gardening, canning of fruits and vegetables, and visiting with her neighbors and members of the Oakley Methodist Church Ladies Aid. Evelyn is survived by her children: Joannie Oxenreider and Roe Oxenreider, both of Chariton; brothers: Bernard (Liela) Mitchell, Frank Mitchell and Richard (Mary) Mitchell; sister-in-law, LaVida Oxenreider; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernard; children: Beth Oxenreider and Craig Oxenreider; brothers: Kenneth Mitchell, Dale Mitchell, Jerry Mitchell, Calvin Mitchell and Joe Mitchell and their spouses; sisters: Dorothy Mitchell, Edna Stansbery, Margaret Morrison and infant Lois Mitchell; and several Oxenreider family members.
